What were the defining moments in YOUR life? Was it the bully on the school bus, the long, soft summer nights capturing fireflies, the day you realized your dad was not Superman after all, your first kiss? All the parts of growing up, figuring out just who you are and why make up “the Pilgrimage”. The included essay by the same name is only a part of this work and only a part of the true pilgrimage – the story of a young, fragile girl’s trip to adulthood. She watched along the way and she wrote the journey.

About the Author

Susan Adkins was born in Martinsville, Virginia on July 2, 1948, the second of three children. She attended Henry County schools, majored in English at James Madison University and earned her Masters in Library Science at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Prior to her death in 1998, she was Head Reference Librarian at NASA’s Technical Library in Hampton, Virginia. She published many technical articles, poignant and funny fictionalized tales about events from her youth and essays about environmental matters. Susan died along with her friend Martha Delles in a small plane crash at Langley Air Force Base.
