About the Book

Dux Schneider was drawn to mountains, and he recognized that in a rapidly modernising country the traditional life of mountain peoples would undergo inevitable and irreversible change. His trek through the Bolkar range was a dream come true, the culmination of his Turkish explorations. He got there before television and mobile phones, when the Yürük nomads and Tahtacís were still a people apart. About the Author

Dux Schneider was born in Baltimore MD in 1924, son of a Swiss father and German mother, newly in the US. He grew up and was educated in Belgium and England where his father worked. When the family returned to the USA during WWII, Dux enlisted and served in the Normandy landings and the Ardennes. After several jobs in publishing in the US and Europe, Dux turned to writing, always his first ambition. He was an ardent traveller and mountaineer; following a climbing expedition in Turkey, he and his wife lived there for some time and Dux wrote The Traveller’s Guide to Turkey, published in England by Jonathan Cape in 1974. Bolkar, his second book, completed shortly before he died in 1978, was first published posthumously in a German translation by F. Brockhaus Verlag.
