About the Book
Above the Gutter is a novel about roofers. Some roofers fall from the above and below the gutter and live to tell the tale, others don’t. It’s the difference between hitting a handrail or landing in a bush.
Shovelhead cracks the whip to get the roof on before the storm. Sparky and Freddie work side by side slapping down the asphalt shingles and trade insults. Accordion lumps seventy-pound bundles up the ladder. Freddie reveals to Sparky that he’s in love with his sister, Brenda. Sparky laughs and tells him she’ll never date a blue-collar bum. Freddie feels trapped in his profession and only a seismic event will catapult him out of his rut and into the arms of Sparky’s sister.
