About the Book

In a two-part series of autobiographical novels, Seduced by Liberty is the third, a searing tale of love and jealousy; however, reading of each novel is independent, story line self-contained. Kabira the protagonist tells his life history starting from March 1949 when his grandmother dies and meets Liberty who importunes him to accompany her to Kashmir for vacation, setting the stage for their four-year romance in Kashmir, the Mussourie hill station and in Agra in the backdrop of Taj Mahal which is a monument to eternal love. While Kabira is engaged in a romantic relationship with a foreign young woman, his family members struggle to survive—his father Atman’s first business in partnership fails and second time he is swindled out of his two-year savings by his partner; his uncle Piyush ekes out a living by selling firewood and working as a coolie at the railway station, grinding poverty his lot; his sister Supriya’s family languishes like other teeming refugees in the concrete warrens of sprawling Kingsway Camp, a 1947 Independence landmark. During the same time, his teenage bother Manas, still in school, goes through traumatic experiences of life because of stressful situations in the family and post-Partition social upheaval. In this literary quest, Nandan explores cross-cultural and cross-continental differences between East and West, triumph of love through determination and understanding each other, nuances of life caught in the web of despondency overcome by the articles of will and hope.
