About the Book
These essays address some of the challenges to character and the moral sense in our materialistic culture as getting and spending has eclipsed the influence of organized religion and squeezed moral idealism to the margins of our collective consciousness. Thoreau’s examined life and reflections serve to illustrate the kind of moral wisdom practicable for a pluralistic society and a multicultural world, the wisdom epitomized in Thoreau’s deathbed admonition when asked for his thoughts on the world to come: “One world at a time.”
