About the Book
Recognizing that some folks consider that anthologies of poetry are "a dime a dozen", this book has been written to refute that charge. Presented herein is a unique variety of "easy to read", enjoyable works that have been designated as "DELIGHTFUL" by audiences throughout the United States and Abroad. The poems are selected from a large cross section of original works, written and performed over a period of forty years by "Doc" Lockhart, an honored and "Distinguished Member" of the International Society of Poets, as well as an award winner of the American Association of Poets. Each poem conveys a message such as "Love, "Food for Thought", "From An Historical Perspective", "For the Funny Bone", or "Reflections from a Religious Perspective". Consistent with the title, the first work in the book is entitled "Delightful", and asks the proverbial question "What makes you feel "delightful"? and proceeds to share the writer's belief that "what makes a person delightful is being smart enough to have a positive sense of self, and smart enough to look out for others besides yourself..." This "Food for Thought" is followed by the most highly praised, award-winning piece in Lockhart's repertoire entitled My Mother's Prayer" in which the writer conveys the fact that “Everything I am, and everything I will ever be is because my mother prayed for me…" Among other poems honoring "God's blessing called Mothers" include “A Prayer for Mothers” written in gratitude to Mom's and provided as a prayer for Mother's Day service at the writer's church and "What A Friend We Have in Mothers", which can be sung to the tune of the hymn "What A Friend We Have in Jesus". A natural transition to the next section of the book focuses on "Love" and romance, and includes a variety of poems from the heart with such titles as "Getting to Know You". "Dedicated to My Love on Valentine's Day" and "My Love for You". Your Funny Bone will be titillated by the saga of "Little Willie Smith", and such works as "Shopping: The Difference Between Women and Men". From an historical perspective: The author remembers "The Day I Met Martin Luther King. and praises President Obama for "The Audacity of His Hope". The book concludes with a sampling of "Little Delights" on a variety of subjects. The writer prays that you will be delighted by what you read here.
