About the Book

Virginia’s early colonists, imbued with the enlightenment of England’s Renaissance, were as educated as England could afford. Colonial Well of Knowledge is a neglected story of their qualities and determination to create an educated and cultured civilization in Virginia’s wilderness. By the early 1620s, powerful forces at work for a college were becoming entrenched in the colony’s culture and political fabric. They steadily enriched a wellspring of intellectual and cultural resources. Reflecting the Virginia people as a whole, leaders of America’s first representative legislature channeled the indefatigable forces at work for a college through the 1691 General Assembly. The result was the Royal Charter for a college.

About the Author

Short Biography of John H. Garrett, Jr. John H. Garrett, Jr., before a portrait of James Blair, first president of the College of William and Mary. As president of the College’s Class of 1940, he and his wife, Ann Terrell Garrett, spearheaded their class’ alumni activities. He was president of the Alumni Society in 1980-82, and in 1984 was the recipient of the Alumni Medallion, the Society’s highest honor. Garrett was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valor in combat in World War II. Later, the Legion of Merit was presented to him. Retired as a Navy Captain, he settled in Irvington, Virginia. He established and managed a bank trust department, was president of Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library and elected five times to the Irvington Town Council.
