Tales of an Octogenarian tells stories of Gene’s eightieth year and reflects a milestone in hisexciting and colorful life. From December of 2005 when he turned 79 until this most recent birthday, Gene had excitement, experiences, and adventures that he never anticipated. As the year drew toan end, Gene gathered the year’s adventures into a series of short stories, which he hasdeveloped a true knack for writing.
Beginning with his wife, Lila’s, cataract operations and then her knee replacementsurgery, this book reflects much of their close and loving relationship. The Corey LidleCirrus SR20 airplane hit their apartment building on October 11th, 2006, while they were at home in their apartment. The story of their traveling down 37 fl ights of stairs, after two apartments were tragically hit less than thirty feet from where they stood, is a tale of love and togetherness that shows their tie to each other. It is their 37th year of marriage and as Gene has noted that “The trip down as the fi re raged above us represented one year of our life together for each flight of stairs.” As they traveled the steps from the 37th floorexperiencing intense protection from one another, they renewed their marriage vows.
