About the Book

Maiv Txiab Vam Xeeb Yaj has written this book to summarize her insights, challenges and discoveries during her time working in many capacities as an interpreter. Maiv Txiab illustrates the processes while identifying the barriers and gaps in critical meanings and messages which facilitate misunderstandings between Hmong and English language. If we are not communicating or conveying the same language, thinking the same way, then we can not see the world through the same eyes.

About the Author

Maiv Txiab Vam Xeeb Yaj has been interpreting for more than twenty years. After graduating from a community college, she worked as a receptionist and interpreted at a health clinic for many Hmong patients in the past who did not know much English when they came to see their primary physicians. She also worked as a part-time Hmong interpreter for a mental health clinic with many Hmong clients who had been affected with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from the Vietnam War. Now, she is currently working as an over-the-phone Hmong interpreter for a company for doctors, nurses, social workers, and many other professional staffs who work with Hmong patients.

"Challenges of Interpreting Between Hmong Patients and Western Medicine, after I read her book, I appreciated Maiv Txiab's work very much that she shared some of the challenging cases between the medical doctors and Hmong patients and how difficult the misunderstanding and cross-culture are. In order to get some of the challenging cases to resolve, the medical doctors and nurses need the Hmong interpreter to help.
Now, I know and understand how important and critical it is to have a Hmong interpreter at the hospitals or a medical clinics to be available. Good job in acknowledging those who have been supporting of her desire to give others a clear picture of her desire to educate us of the challenges interpreting bring. The doctors and nurse in this country are very lucky that Maiv Txiab is willing to do this task, so when they deal with an older Hmong patient who does not speak any English, they can call the Hmong interpreter to help to clarify some of the misunderstanding and cross-culture.
I believe Maiv Txiab was very clear in her explanation of how her interpretation works, and because she knows well each side - Doctors & Hmong patients. I feel very fortunate to have read Maiv Txiab's book, and now it leaves me ready to read more."
