About the Book
A Philosopher in Lent is an edited version of a daily journal I kept during Lent in 2015. For the past ten years, I have observed Lent as a parishioner at the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist in Milwaukee. The importance of Lent for me is two-fold: (1) it deepens a contemplative understanding of the spiritual life and (2) it provides a specific time and a community in which top priority is given to what Socrates called “care of the soul.” In the course of the forty days, I pondered a variety of topics in no particular order. Therefore, the book should be read intuitively. Ample spaces are provided in which readers can write their own responses to the text.
