Friendly Betrayal

About the Book

This book offers a different perspective than that found in mainstream US and Texas history because it acquaints readers with pre-1836 people, places, and events. The title Friendly Betrayal aims to capture the Spanish Mexican Texans’ disappointment when they (1) first welcomed US immigrants to Mexico (Texas) as fellow Mexicans and (2) how (after 1836) the growing Anglo Saxon majority treated our ancestors as foreigners in their own homeland. Part I contains a fictionalized storyline that delves into the initial blending of Native American and Spanish European cultures that produced today’s mestizo people. Due to their genetic cultural (not political) ties to Mexico, this group (generally called Mexican Americans in the United States) continues to strongly maintain, defend, and preserve their unique identity, history, and heritage on this side of the border. About the Author

Mr. José Antonio (Joe) López was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. USAF Veteran. He is a direct descendant of Don Javier Uribe and Doña Apolinaria Bermúdez de Uribe, one of the earliest families that settled in what is now South Texas in 1750. He is married to the former Cordelia Jean “Cordy” Dancause of Laredo. He has college degrees from Laredo Jr. College and Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, TX. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education. He is the author of: “The Last Knight (Don Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara Uribe, A Texas Hero)”, “Nights of Wailing, Days of Pain (Life in 1920s South Texas)”, “The First Texas Independence, 1813”, and “Preserving Early Texas History (Essays of an 8th Generation South Texan)”. Mr. Lopez is also a newspaper columnist who writes about issues affecting Spanish-surnamed citizens in the Southwest. He and his wife visit school campuses throughout South Texas teaching about the Spanish Mexican roots of Texas. Mr. Lopez is the founder of the Tejano Learning Center, LLC, and www.tejanosunidos.org , a web site dedicated to Spanish Mexican people and events in U.S. history that are mostly overlooked in mainstream history books.
