At dinnertime, Danny remembered what Ryan wanted him to ask his parents. “Ryan's family is going to the beach for a week and can't take Toby. He asked me if I'd watch him, but I told him I'd have to check with you. It's okay if we can't. We don't have any more dog food anyway.” His mom and dad looked at each other. His dad said, “Well, I'm sure Ryan can bring some of his food over here for the week. Is there any reason why you shouldn't help your friend?” “I just don't feel like it,” answered Danny. “Does he have anyone else who can take care of Toby?” his mom asked. “He asked his grandma, but she can't do it this time.” “Well, I guess Ryan knows that you'll take good care of Toby,” said his dad. “I'm sure he wants to leave him with someone he trusts. It's okay with us, but you'll have to make the decision whether you want to or not.”

School is out for the summer. Normally, Danny would be excited to be spending the summer with his best friend, Ryan. But this year is different. Sadly, Danny has just lost his beloved dog, Nicky. When Ryan asks him for a favor while on the bus ride home, Danny is unsure of what to do. But as he is about to discover, sometimes the most difficult favors are the ones that help us the most. In this heartwarming story, a boy who loses his best furry friend experiences events that help him to move on from grief to eventually find happiness again.

Lucy Geddes has always made books and storytelling a major part of her life, whether through teaching in the classroom, reading to her children, or creating stories with her grandchildren. She lives with her husband in New Hampshire where she enjoys swimming, kayaking, biking, cross-country skiing, traveling, sewing, crocheting, and cross-stitching. This is her first book.
