The Human Paradox

The Human Paradox What Now? argues that we Homo sapiens need to transition away from our tradition-bound political/social/cultural thinking to a more purposeful mix of species-survival and planetary-integrity strategies. If the earth belongs to the living, as Thomas Jefferson said, then we the living need to acknowledge our sameness and downplay our exceptionalist individualism. Why bother? Because our planet can no longer abide our endless hedonism, nationalism and religiosity that separate rather than unite. Climate change, Covid-19, wasteful wars like Vietnam, Iraq and long-term Afghanistan evidence the need for a disengagement from historical imperatives that were not designed to sustain species and planet. Action at the species level will not be easy or fast but the tendrils of this tap-root thinking are already spreading throughout the world. Private-sector business, progressive government thinkers, scientists, youth, greenies, investors – all see the massive potential of shifting infrastructure, economics, science, agriculture, engineering, medicine and virtually every other human endeavor toward the tandem goals of species survival and planetary integrity. Politics needs to acknowledge and adapt to this emerging reality. Human Fulfillment on a Whole Planet is the byword for this Sustainability Age. The key to such a transition? Human individuals accepting human sameness, recognizing the reality of each world they live in, and understanding that nature has limits which our species cannot outwit.
