About the Book

This book depicts the simple elements of struggle of human endurance, loyalty, and sacrifice. These elements are forcibly and vividly translated in London’s attempt to emphasize his biological-, sociological-, economical-, and environmental determinism where man has little or no control to circumvent the brutal forces of nature for survival. Further, a by-product of his deterministic shaping of London’s views was his outlook on racial superiority. According to London, the Anglo-Saxon race is superior to all other races and is destined to be the master race of the world.

Undoubtedly, his views had been colored by his mother’s racism, as well as by his extensive reading of Kipling (whom he entertained and admired with a strength amounting to devotion) and Du Chaillu, in particular The Viking Age.
