About the Book

Friends and Neighbors - sometimes suspenseful, heartbreaking, funny – is the story of two families. The Friends are John and Elizabeth Thompson, a Quaker couple, and their sons Peter and Noah; the Neighbors are Ruth, Amos, Fanny and Sam Hudson, freed slaves. John and Elizabeth work hard to be Quakers in a world that hates pacifists and abolitionists. Amos learns to run the farm, given to him by the Quakers. He also learns to fish, which he and Fanny come to love. For it is as different from slavery as it is possible to be. When Quakers take Amos's farm back, John volunteers to be an Indian Agent at the the Kaw Indian Reservation in Kansas, subjecting his family to great danger.
