About the Author
The author grew up in New York City, where he attended public schools. He then attended M.I.T. and in 1956 received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. In 1957 he earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering practice, also from M.I.T., and in 1966 was granted a doctorate in chemical engineering by the University of Pennsylvania. After spending eight years in the “real world” doing engineering research, he spent twenty-six years teaching high school chemistry, physics, advanced placement chemistry, and advanced placement physics at the Princeton Day School in Princeton, New Jersey. He is divorced and has two children, Ralph, a graduate of Harvard who is a middle-school teacher in a Boston public school, and Amy, who has interrupted her studies at the University of Massachusetts to bring up her five children.
