About the Book

This is a reporter´s view of Guam told through news stories and Fourth-Estate humor culled from the author´s thirteen years on the Western Pacific islands of Guam and Micronesia. The book covers the geography, history, and lifestyle of Guam, as well as stories of visitors, such as Amelia Earhart, Bob Hope, Richard Nixon, Pierre Salinger, and Tiny Tim. Chapters include stories about typhoons, Vietnam refugees, Japanese stragglers, brown tree snakes, as well as island legends and recipes. Guam commemorated its one-hundred-year anniversary as a U.S. possession and unincorporated territory in 1998, and the year 2000 marked a half a century of U.S. citizenship for the residents of Guam.

The first edition of “Where America´s Day Begins, Confessions of a Jungle Journalist,” published in 1998, sold out quickly to former and present Guam residents, armchair travelers, and curious readers. By popular demand, the author decided to reprint and update the book. This edition has more information about the Micronesian Islands than the first issue had and is a useful guide to anyone planning travel to these laid-back Western Pacific islands.

About the Author

While living on Guam from 1965 to1978, Janet G. Go wrote Micronesia's first tourist guidebook and was a reporter for Guam's daily newspaper. She held editing and writing positions with U.S. Navy and Air Force publications until her retirement from U.S. Civil Service in 1991. Her travel articles have appeared in newspapers and magazines around the country. She lives in Grand Junction, Colorado.
